      June 2010 NewsletterThe E.U.P. has had summer-like weather this spring which made working at the train museum more pleasant. We thank K. Harding, B. Russell, and R. Snow who did window covers and signs. A special thanks to all the volunteers who did the prep work to get the train open. 3rd of July - The Hist. Soc. is holding their July events on Sat. July 3rd this year. We hope with a blizzard of publicity we can get a good crowd of people to come out. We will have the inflatable jumper, kid's games, flea mkt., bake sale and crafters, plus food so come and join us at the train! Please bring your flea market items to Newland's garage on State St. across from the C.C. Telephone Co. between June 21 and June 27. No shoes, clothes, large appliances or furniture please. Lighthouse - We welcome our new caretakers, Terry Andrews and Roxanne Anthony to Pt. Iroquois. Roxanne is working with the flowers and developing the 1800's garden. The turn lane is finished and the exterior of the LH will be painted this summer. As a 501(c)3 entity, our society has been using Gail Davis and Carol Eccleston, as Experience Works people at the LH. We have applied for a 3rd person to work at the train this summer and the LH next winter. We thank Zelma Cohoon for coordinating them. Walk for the Depot - On may 20, Brimley elementary students walked laps in the 2nd Walk for the Depot. It was a beautiful day and the kids had a great time. The effort netted a whopping $800+! Chris Seigner was named the 1st place fundraiser and Lauren and Autumn Halvorsen taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Again, the HS Key Club led by Coby MacMaster did a stellar job organizing this. More thanks to teacher Peggy Osborne and Elem. Prin. Pete Routhier, but especially to the kids and their families! We hope to break ground after the 4th this summer. Quilt - Dotty Lemay and her ladies have finished a second quilt for us to raffle. It is a stained glass pattern and will be displayed on the 4th and the rest of the season. We will raffle it off on the day we close the museum, Oct. 10 at 10am. We thought that 10/10/10 @ 10am was unique! Tickets will again be $1 apiece or 6 for $5. Thanks to the Soo Co-op Credit Union for paying the cost of the tickets for a second year. Regular Business - At our may meeting the election of officers was held, with the current officers being re-elected. They include, Pres.-Janet Russell, V.P.-Pat Paul, Sec'y-Marian Newland, Treas.-Carol Eccleston and Parliamentarian-Frances Robbins. Farewells - We are sad to announce the deaths of 5 memebers this year; Jean Boult, Lila Miller, Wayne Gady, Ron Routhier, and Jim Davis. We will miss you all. Our need for volunteers is even greater than in the past, so if you can spare 2-3 hours periodically, we could certainly use you. Dates to Remember Our Meetings will be at 1pm Tues. at the Superior Twp Hall: June 18, July 29, Aug. 17, Sept. 20, and Oct. 18. EUP Consortium 10/9. Activities - Our activities will be booths at: History Fest in SSM Sat. July 31, Arts Festival in SSM on Tues. Aug. 3. We will sell books, gift items, and quilt raffle tickets. Finally our Harvest Dinner is Sept. 24 from 4:30 - 7 in the BHS cafeteria. Mmmmm. Gift Shop - We have received copies of a new book, by Jan Huttenstine, on Whitefish Pt. It retails for $25 but we offer it for $23. We have already sold our first order and have gotten more. Exhibits - The school exhibit across from the H.S. office was barbershop equipment in the fall and presently is bells. The train entrance exhibit is a hat collection. Accessions - So far this season we have recieved photos of the Round Island lighthouse ruins c. 1920, from Bob Fabricino; 2 fawns dringing the first Soo Creamery carton milk, from Bernice Scozzafave; the Milligan Fishery from Ted Milligan and a 1930 address book from the Russells. Many thanks for your generosity. Train Beautification - Flowers have been donated by Parmer's Farm Mkt. and planted on the museum grounds by Master Gardener JoEllen Snow. Train painting and scraping will be done by Mike Bennett. Sault Cultural Network - A new area group has been formed to foster sharing of info among arts and cultural groups. We hosted the June 9 meeting at the Lighthouse. Community Foundation - Finally, we remind you of your BM-B Hist. Soc. Endowment fund withing the Chippewa Co. Community Foundation - P.O. box 1979, Sault Ste. Marie, 49783. Contributions give you a state tax break. The Hist. Soc. Makes a yearly contribution and a $25 memorial donation for each deceased member. Interest earned is available for society use. We hope the beautiful weather continues and we have a successful season. Please stop if you are in the area, we always welcome visitors. Remember the good old days!

The Bay Mills Brimley Historical Research Society was recently named the Volunteer Group of the Month by the United Way Volunteer Center.  This group works with the Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse by helping to refurbish and maintain the site.  They also established and maintain the Wheels of History Museum in Brimley.
