      June 2006 Newsletter

Good Day to you all. We begin our 11th year with an apology. We had printer problems recently and as a result this newsletter is slightly later than usual. Memorial Day weekend saw about 50 visitors, but otherwise, the season has has a very slow start. Hopefully we wkill pick up steam as the weather warms up and people start their vacations. We were only open on weekends until June 21st, when we opened from Wed. thru Sun. each week. The hours are still 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM and YES! we always need help!! If you enjoy visiting with people, we could use you. We ask 3 hours a week and the time goes by very quickly. We had nominations and election of officers at our April and May meetings. We did have online nominations and voting and our officers for the next 2 years are: Pres. Janet Russell, VP Pat Paul, Sec. Marian Newland, Treas. Carol Eccleston. We would like to Thank Mary Jane Bernier for her excellent service to our group as Vice President for the past decade or so. Well done Mary Jane!! We cannot write a June newsletter without mentioning the 4th of July celebration. It will be very similar to last year with a bake sale, golf, ring toss, and frog toss games, jumper room, food, crafters, flea market and 50/50 draw. After the 1:00 PM parade, there will be other activities at the school as well. Once again you may drop off flea market items at Newlands garage across from the telephone company on State St. We will be collecting from June 23 to June 30. This will give the Ladies time to organize and price items. NO CLOTHES, SHOES, LARGE FURNITURE OR APPLIANCES PLEASE!! Other fundraisers planned for this summer include the Summer Arts Festival in The Soo on August 1st, where we will raffle a wooden sculpture of PT. Iroquois Light donated by Martha Dykes. The sculpture will be on display on the 4th of July and you can buy a chance then. The antique show will be in August with the date depending on availability of the appraisers, so start rounding up your collectibles so you'll be ready. Finally, our harvest dinner is planned for Fri Sept 15 at Brimley High School. Please mark you calendar. You may have seen the advisory in the paper about the Forest service proposal including rest rooms at the overlook and parking lot on the west side of the Lighthouse. We did write a letter opposing the projects as unnecessary, and the projects have been dropped. John and Suzanne Zier are the caretakers at the Lighthouse again this year. They have done some terrific things out there and we appreciate their efforts!!

The Bay Mills Brimley Historical Research Society was recently named the Volunteer Group of the Month by the United Way Volunteer Center.  This group works with the Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse by helping to refurbish and maintain the site.  They also established and maintain the Wheels of History Museum in Brimley.
